The ultimate sweet indulgence. Layers of crisp, golden phyllo pastry packed with finely crushed pistachios and walnuts, deeply drenched in a fragrant honey syrup.
Ingredients for Pistachio Baklava
- 1 package phyllo dough, thawed
- 2 cups finely crushed pistachios
- 1 cup crushed walnuts
- 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 cup honey or simple syrup
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon rose water (optional)
Step-by-Step Cooking Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 175°C (350°F) and generously butter the bottom and sides of a baking dish.
- In a medium bowl, mix the crushed pistachios, crushed walnuts, and ground cinnamon together.
- Unroll the phyllo dough. Place two sheets into the baking dish and brush the top generously with melted butter. Repeat until you have layered about 8-10 sheets.
- Sprinkle a thick, even layer of the nut mixture over the buttered phyllo sheets.
- Top with two more sheets of phyllo, brush with butter, and repeat with another layer of nuts. Finish with a final top layer of 8-10 buttered sheets.
- Using a sharp knife, carefully cut the baklava into diamonds or squares all the way to the bottom. Bake for 40-45 minutes until golden and crisp.
- While the baklava is hot out of the oven, immediately pour the cold honey or simple syrup (mixed with rose water) evenly over the top. Let it cool completely for 4 hours to absorb before serving.
